Richard Turner Lyman Jr. ’60

Richard Turner Lyman Jr. ’60 died peacefully at his home in Menauhant at East Falmouth, Massachusetts, on October 30, 2012. His beloved wife, Hila, was at his side. A celebration of his life was hosted by Hila at their home on November 10, 2012. Class of ’60s in attendance included Jim Adler, Lyn and Carolyn Carlin, John Goyette, Spike Hamilton, Gene and Judy Kohn and Sam McMurtrie. Rick was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he attended public schools and Deerfield Academy before coming to Dartmouth. Following his graduation from Dartmouth he spent three years in the Army before beginning his career as a group insurance underwriter at Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., which later merged with INA to become CIGNA. He and Hila retired in 1994 and moved into the Lyman family home in Menauhant, where he had spent every summer of his life. He enjoyed golf as a member of Woods Hole Golf Club from 1992 to 2008. At Dartmouth Rick was a loyal member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. In our 50th reunion Musings he listed his College activities as being a member of the “house ping pong team” and “varsity whales tails.” House president Lyn Carlin remembers Rick as “the best social chairman ever,” paying attention to all details and wanting to make people happy. After Rick was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he and Hila traveled to Palau, New Guinea, and the Andaman Isles for exotic snorkeling expeditions.
