Richard M. Newkirk ’57
Richard M. Newkirk ’57 of Northville, Michigan, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2011. His health had been declining for several years with emphysema. Dick had proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He came to Hanover from the Grosse Point Shores School in Michigan. While at Dartmouth he majored in economics, was a member of Sigma Chi and participated in rugby, the Dartmouth Christian Union, Young Republicans, the Pre-Law Club and the Dartmouth Outing Club. He went on to earn a master’s from Northwestern University. Dick worked as an investment banker for many years. He enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and skeet shooting. He was a life master at duplicate bridge. A lover of politics, he looked forward to the conversations he had with his friends. Dick was predeceased after 42 years of marriage by his wife, Lorraine, in 2007. He is survived by his stepdaughter Jill, three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Herb Young ’57 had remained in contact with Dick through the last several years of his declining health, and reported that Dick “had not really been able to do much of anything physical for a long time.”
