Richard M. Bartlett Jr. ’89
Richard M. Bartlett Jr. ’89 passed away on January 24, 2014, surrounded by his family. The cause was a rare lung disease, for which he was on the waiting list for a transplant. Rick came to Dartmouth from Hudson Falls, New York, where he was a star athlete. He earned varsity letters in football and track and field, majored in computer science and was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Sphinx. Rick began his career on Wall Street with Drexel Burnham, soon moving to Smith Barney. Following the Salomon Smith Barney merger in 1997, he was named a managing director, one of the youngest ever to attain that title. After the Travelers-Citigroup merger in 1998 he was named co-head of equity capital markets, Americas, a position he held until he was named head of Americas equities in September 2007. At the time of his death Citigroup wrote that Rick “had a unique ability to connect with people, communicate clearly, solve problems, defuse trouble with wit and humor and make a lasting, positive impact.” He is survived by his wife, Loring, and their children Jack, Cole and Caroline. The family relocated to Rye, New York, from Manhattan in 2010. Rick served as a leadership agent for the Dartmouth Alumni Fund. He loved playing golf and gardening and looked forward to annual family vacations in New England. Many ’89s spoke at Rick’s service, and friends say they will remember his kind spirit, trademark smile, optimism and exemplary character.
