Richard John Conroy ’47

Richard John Conroy ’47, M.D., died of Parkinson’s disease on June 21 in La Jolla, California. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and in the naval V-12 program was assigned to Dartmouth, where he played lacrosse and joined the German Club. He completed his M.D. at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia in 1950. After an internship at Bellevue Hospital he served in the Navy from 1951 to 1954 as a flight surgeon with Carrier Air Group 19 during the Korean War. He returned to Bellevue for postgrad training in internal medicine and cardiology. He practiced in Manhattan for 12 years and in 1969 accepted a position with the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, where he remained for 36 years, rising to become head of general internal medicine. He was a member of the La Jolla Chamber of Commerce, La Jolla Academy of Medicine and Rotary Club, as well as honorary societies. He enjoyed travel, tennis, bridge and the theater. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.
