Richard Homere Gagne ’52

Richard Homere Gagne ’52 passed away of natural causes in Arlington, Virginia, on March 7, 2015. Dick was born in Franklin, New Hampshire, on February 5, 1930. He attended the Franklin schools, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1948 and Dartmouth in 1952. At college he majored in French and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean conflict. After his discharge Dick earned his master’s in education from the University of New Hampshire. He taught at Brewster Academy and at the Hill School Camp, both in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, then at the Lawrence Academy in Groton, Massachusetts, from 1958 to 2000. He taught French and English as a second language and was chair of the language department. He also served as a student advisor, advocate for the Winterim program and coach of several sports. After his retirement a Winterim scholarship fund was created in his honor and, for many years, has featured an annual golf tournament called the Gagne Elm Tree Classic. In December of 2014 Dick moved to live near family in Arlington. He was predeceased by son Richard. He is survived by son Charles and his wife, Laurel; daughter Katharine and her husband, Geof; daughter-in-law Elise; former wife Margery; and seven grandchildren.
