Richard Doyle McDonough ’52

Richard Doyle McDonough ’52 passed away on June 27 in Palm City, Florida, surrounded by his wife and family. Born in St. Stephen, Canada, in 1931, Dick came to Dartmouth from Woodland, Maine. After graduation he embarked upon a successful career in accounting and finance, retiring in 1994 as vice chairman and chief financial officer of newsprint manufacturer Bowater Inc. He and his wife, Caroline, were married in 1956 and in his earlier positions with General Electric and the Singer Co. Dick and Caroline traveled the world. On their honeymoon they drove to Mexico, where Dick was based and where their three children were born. During the 1960s and 1970s Dick, with his family, enjoyed working in Europe, traveling across the Atlantic many times as he took up positions in Scotland, Germany and England. Eventually the family settled in Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1979. He and Caroline later retired in Florida at Harbour Ridge in Palm City. Dick made many lifelong friends during his years in Hanover and remained a devoted supporter of Dartmouth College. He served as his class president for eight years and received the distinguished Dartmouth Alumni Award in 2000. Dick’s father, Kenneth, was a member of the class of 1925 and Dick’s wife was an adopted member of that class. He is survived by Caroline; children Lisa, David ’82 and Philip and their spouses; grandsons Richard, Spencer and Jack; sister Nancy; and brother Michael.
