R. Kevin Hughes ’66

R. Kevin Hughes ’66 of Grantham, New Hampshire, died September 19, 2018, after a long battle with primary progressive aphasia. At Dartmouth Kevin was a member of the Marching Band, and as an alumnus he was an admissions interviewer and alumni fund volunteer for many years. Kevin and Margaret White married in 1967 while he was chair of the English department at Kents Hill (Maine) School. In 1974 Kevin completed a master’s at the University of Massachusetts and began his career in banking as a personnel officer. He worked at several banks in and around New York City. In 1976 his family moved to Fair Haven, New Jersey. Through the years they spent hours at the beach, sailing, and gardening. They all enjoyed skiing and hiking, so were happy to visit their home in Killington, Vermont, as often as possible. Kevin also was an avid volunteer, serving on the local board of education and assisting retirees to select Medicare gap insurance. After his retirement he did some substitute teaching and conducted Princeton Review classes. He and his wife had some fine trips, notably to England, Ireland, and Italy. In 2010 Kevin and Margy moved to Grantham, where he volunteered at the local library and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center until ill health made it impossible. Throughout his life, his children, Patricia and Nicholas ’94, were a source of pride and happiness, as were his seven grandchildren. Donations in his name may be sent to Massachusetts General Hospital Development Office, Primary Progressive Aphasia, at www.massgeneral.org/give/donate.
