Peter Baldwin Bogardus ’51
Peter Baldwin Bogardus ’51 died on April 18 at home in Mill Valley, California, of a massive heart attack. He was born and raised in Mount Vernon, Ohio, and graduated from Lawrenceville School. He was involved with freshman and varsity football, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Dartmouth Players, Dragon and rugby. He then participated in the two-year Tuck School program and spent two years in the U.S. Air Force. After going to San Francisco he joined Polaroid, married Shirley Paider in 1957 and subsequently established a family of a daughter and two sons. He retired from Polaroid in 1968 and took a year off in Kitzbuhel, Austria. He then entered the securities business in 1969 as a stockbroker with Henry F. Swift & Co., a small firm in San Francisco. His talent for meeting people, making and keeping friends through Dartmouth alumni, the Olympic Club and Bohemian Club, made him a natural for the securities business. Early on he realized that finding money and letting someone else manage it was better for his clients and himself. His time and talent devoted to Dartmouth included efforts on fundraising, enrollment and alumni club leadership and as class newsletter editor; he received the Spirit of ’51 and the Alumni Award. Pete and Shirley traveled widely, visiting every continent. Ill health caused his retirement in 2007 from UBS, a successor firm to Swift and later Piper Jaffray. Surviving Peter are Shirley, daughter Betsy, sons Peter Jr. ’87 and Andy and four grandchildren. His charm, optimism and generous nature will always be remembered.
