Paul Francis Young ’43

Paul Francis Young ’43, Tu’44, died August 30, 2014, at Harvest Hill, in Lebanon, New Hampshire. After childhood in West Hartford, Connecticut, he graduated from the Loomis School, where he was on the honor roll and worked on the school paper. A cum laude graduate of Dartmouth, Paul was a member of Ambas Americas and the Spanish Club and worked on The Dartmouth. He majored in economics and attended Tuck. Paul was a communications officer for two years in the U.S. Navy on armed convoy duty in the North Atlantic. While studying architecture at MIT, following the war, Paul met Ruth Crocker. They were married in 1948 and moved west, where Paul began graduate studies in educational administration at Berkley. They returned to Hanover three years later, when Paul became assistant to the treasurer at Dartmouth. He retired 20 years later as treasurer and then became treasurer at the Dartmouth Savings Bank, where he installed the first ATM in New Hampshire, created a drive-up teller station and made other technological innovations. Bank president in 1973, Paul retired in 1983. He served on the board of overseers of the Hanover Inn, as trustee of the hospital, on the Dartmouth Hitchcock assembly of overseers. He was involved in town affairs—conservation, finance, zoning—and St. Thomas Church and Outreach House. He was named Hanover Citizen of the Year in 1992. Paul enjoyed duplicate bridge. He also loved the summers he and Ruth spent on Pine Island in Lake Winnipesaukee, next door to classmate Howie Leavitt and his wife, Joan. Paul is survived by Ruth, children Sally, Larry, Arthur and Charles, seven grandchildren and four great-grandsons.
