Oliver S. Hayward ’60

Oliver S. Hayward ’60 of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, died on July 2, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee after a long battle with multiple health issues. In addition to his wife, Tamerin, Oliver is survived by stepdaughters Michele and Sherry, sister Susan and sister-in-law Marianne, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. Oliver entered Dartmouth from New London, New Hampshire, after graduation from New London High School. Following his graduation from Dartmouth—where he majored in history and was active in the Young Democrats, DOC and the Boxing Club—he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. On June 6, 1984, he married Tamerin Mathiesen. A professor of history, Oliver taught various subjects and classes to thousands of students during his 40-year tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. In addition to his love of teaching Oliver was very active in Christ United Methodist Church of Racine, Wisconsin, where he served on the health ministry team and chaired the staff-parish ministry team. Oliver was passionate about his football and hockey teams and was an intensely competitive bridge player. A celebration of his life was held at Christ United Methodist Church on July 8, 2014.
