Thomas Daniel Bracken ’63

Thomas Daniel Bracken ’63 passed away on December 23, 2025, in Portland, Oregon, of complications from dementia. He was born in Seattle and attended Roosevelt High School where he was active in football, track, and glee club. Dan majored in physics at Dartmouth and was a brother and treasurer of Phi Gamma Delta, a member of Sphinx, and a rugby player. He obtained an M.S. (1965) and Ph.D. (1971) in low-temperature physics at Stanford University, where he was a key contributor to the Gravity Probe B experiment and where he met his future wife, Jeanne. They moved to Portland and Dan taught physics as an assistant professor for three years at Reed College until moving to the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland working with environmental issues related to electric power distribution and high-voltage transmission lines. In 1981, Dan established his own consulting practice providing scientific research and project management expertise related to transmission and distribution systems. He retired in 2012 and led the development of the Eastmorland Garden near Reed College. He was predeceased by his wife; he is survived by three children, including Hillary ’92, and four grandchildren.
