Richard Huntington Sidell Jr. ’67, M.D., died July 27, 2024, in a drowning accident while windsurfing on the Columbia River near Hood River, Oregon. Dick came from East Grand Rapids, Michigan, and at Dartmouth majored in economics, was a brother of Sigma Nu, and was active in the DOC and ski patrol. After graduation he received his M.D. from Wayne State University and served his surgical residency at Presbyterian-Saint Luke’s Hospital, where he remained for his career as an orthopedic surgeon. Dick was an outdoorsman from birth, ice skating, water skiing, sailing, and fishing on the lake that was his backyard; playing golf and hunting and fishing with friends and family throughout his life; and snowboarding and windsurfing as an adult. He was a successful competitive sailor, winning the 1986 Etchells European Championship in 1986, placing second overall in the 1989 Etchells Midwinter Championships in Florida, and crewing in several Chicago-to-Mackinac, Michigan, races. After his retirement in 2006, he spent time heliskiing or snowboarding in winter, in summer windsurfing, standup paddling, and racing his Etchells. The day he died, he was windsurfing with old friends and his partner Jacquelyn “Jackie.” In addition to Jackie, Dick is survived by siblings Mary, Julie, and Jim and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Bruce.
