Philip Hayden White ’67 passed away on March 29. Phil came from Phillips Exeter Academy and at Dartmouth majored in history and was a brother of Phi Tau and a mainstay on the saxophone for the Renegades and the Barbary Coast. He earned an M.D. from the Tufts University School of Medicine in 1971. Phil did his internship as a captain at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. While stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, he met Zella Marie Hubbard, an Army Nurse Corps officer, whom he married in November 1974. After tours at the Pentagon and South Korea, Phil put down roots in Texas in 1976. After a residency in ophthalmology at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, he served as an ophthalmologist until he transferred to the Army Reserve and opened a private practice. He completed 20 years in the Reserve and retired as a colonel. Phil was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and closed out his career as a staff ophthalmologist for the Fort Worth Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic until illness forced his retirement in 2025. He continued to make the music he loved well into his 70s and believed that real men love cats. Phil is survived by his wife of 52 years, Zella; daughter Meridith; three sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
