Merwyn Bagan ’57 , M.D., passed away on February 27 after a period with Alzheimer’s disease. Merwyn came to Dartmouth from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. He majored in philosophy and was active in WDCR (business manager), the Russian Club (secretary), and Germania (president). He earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, then completed neurosurgical training at the National Institute of Health in London and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health and Walter Reed hospitals in Washington, D.C. Moving to Concord, New Hampshire, in 1970, Merwyn established the Surgical Neurology P.A. practice; it expanded into nearby Manchester with four neurosurgeons. He also founded Healthsource New Hampshire, serving as president and chair of Healthsource Inc. He served as chief of surgery, medical staff president, and trustee of the Concord Hospital; president of the N.H. Medical Society; and president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. In 1994 he earned an M.P.H. at Boston University. He met a Nepalese surgeon and moved to Nepal to set up a neurological program, for which he was honored by King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. Merwyn retired in 1997. He loved classical music and was active as a Granite State Symphony board member and in Concord historical preservation. Merwyn is survived by Carol, his wife of 61 years; children Seth, Karin, and Eric; and grandchildren.
