Barbara E. Cassidy ’76 died January 11 in Woodbury, Connecticut, after multiple struggles with cancer. She was born February 17, 1954, in Waterbury to J. Donald and Dorothy West Cassidy. Barbara was known at Nonnewaug High School for excelling in the classroom and on the field hockey and softball fields. She studied math and psychology at Dartmouth, graduating in 1976 as part of its first four-year class of women. She taught English in Iran before studying at the Princeton Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. After graduating in 1981, Barbara began a career in international finance that included positions with Merrill Lynch and the Asian Development Bank, taking her to New York City, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. She retired early, allowing her to raise son Brendan, travel with family, and successfully fight cancer on several occasions. “Barbara loved the outdoors and was often found sitting on the fourth-floor fire escape in North Mass to read in the sunlight,” says former Dartmouth roommate Brita Reed Lucey ’76. “She would always listen to music as she studied. Barbara loved participating in sports, especially field hockey. She loved her friends, the opportunities given to her at Dartmouth, and justice and fairness and fought vigorously for them. Most of all, she loved her four younger sisters, who would often visit her in North Mass.” She is survived by Brendan; sisters Carol, Frances, Margaret, and Diane; and nieces and nephews.
