John S. Jenness Jr. passed away on July 10 in South Paris, Maine. At Dartmouth John was a member of Zeta Psi and the Barbary Coast Jazz Band, majored in history, and played on the lacrosse team. After graduating from Boston University School of Law in 1973, John represented indigent clients for the New York City Legal Aid Society for three years before relocating to South Paris, where he had a general law practice for more than 40 years and was active in local and state Democratic politics. A lifelong fan and player of jazz music (with a special affection for Chet Baker), John was also a skilled photographer. In retirement, his Sunset Hollow Gallery in South Paris displayed photos of wildlife and landscapes, particularly in the American Southwest, he had taken. He also was a Formula 1 race car enthusiast and maintained an extensive collection of antique clocks and vintage film cameras. A third-generation Dartmouth alumnus, John was preceded in death by his grandfather, Thornton, class of 1910, and his father, John ’44. He is survived by brother Thornton ’71 and sister Susan, son Samuel, and grandsons Nolan and Max.
