David B. Payne ’58

David B. Payne ’58 died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on May 6. Dave grew up in Rockville, Connecticut, where he played high school baseball and basketball. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and was a member of Zeta Psi and the Ledyard Canoe Club. Dave returned to the Hartford, Connecticut, area and worked for 30 years at the Connecticut Bank and Trust, where he became president, and then was chief financial officer at Bank of New England. He retired as CEO of Trust Company of Connecticut, which he founded in 1991. In 2006 Dave and his family moved to New London, New Hampshire. Throughout he served as director of several industry associations and not-for-profits, including Hartford Hospital and Colby-Sawyer College, where he was a trustee for 15 years. He wrote in the class reunion book in 1983 on the College and the then-new idea of coeducation: “I carefully guard my old Dartmouth pennant with the Indian on it knowing one day it will be a real collector’s item.” Dave is survived by his wife Beverly, two daughters, one son, and three grandchildren.
