Thomas Alan Blumberg ’55
Thomas Alan Blumberg ’55 passed away July 4 in Manhattan, where he worked and lived for most of his adult life. Tom came to Dartmouth from Polytechnic Prep in Brooklyn. An English major, he pledged at Pi Lambda Phi and belonged to DOC. ROTC coursework at the College fitted him for service as a communications officer in the U.S. Navy, where he earned the rank of lieutenant, j.g. After discharge Tom joined the Leviton Manufacturing Co., manufacturers of home, commercial, and industrial electronic products. He rose to become a group VP and principal and was respected for his intelligence, fairness, and deep sense of responsibility. This carried over to a quarter century’s work as a volunteer in the Jewish community in New York City. Tom served in various capacities—including on the board and executive committee—with the United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York; chaired Hillel International; and was deeply involved in the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York. He and son Ben received the council’s Generation-to-Generation Award in 2018; Tom established the Blumberg Family Young Leadership Award in 2022 and the Blumberg Fellowship for Jewish Community Relations in 2023. Tom’s defining qualities were his warmth, wit, and generosity of spirit. He is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
