Alvan R. Schwartz ’55

Alvan R. Schwartz ’55, M.D., passed away in Beverly, Massachusetts, on February 1.He is survived by his wife, Janice; children Susan, David, and Larry; and 10 grandchildren. Al was brought up in Springfield, Massachusetts, and came to Dartmouth from Classical High School. He majored in philosophy while taking the courses required for medical school. He was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi and the Yacht Club. Al earned his M.D. from Tufts Medical School in 1959. Before beginning his medical practice in Beverly, Al served two years as a major in the Army Medical Center in Fort Belvoir, Maryland. In addition to his 36-year career as a neurologist, Al was an accomplished sculptor, photographer, landscape designer, and author of a world travel book.
