Sam Sparhawk III ’51

Sam Sparhawk III ’51 died at his home in Colchester, Vermont, on November 25, 2021. He was the son and father of Dartmouth graduates (Sam Jr., class of 1922, and Jill ’82). Sam had a long and distinguished career in the investment business. He started as an equities researcher at Girard Bank in Philadelphia and subsequently served as a personal investment advisor at several Philadelphia firms, including W.H. Newbold’s Son & Co., U.S. Trust Co., and Radnor Capital Management. He was a chartered financial analyst and continued to work as a financial planner and investment advisor until his death. He had a 35-year affiliation with Alcoholics Anonymous and took great pleasure in serving others as a sponsor on their paths to recovery. In 2018 he received the Hon. Thomas M. Crowley Award from the Turning Point Center of Chittenden County, Vermont. Vermont was Sam’s “happy place.” He grew up in Burlington and spent many joyous summers in Colchester before returning there full-time in his semi-retirement. He was an avid sailor and passed on to family members the skills and delights of sailing his sloop on Mallett’s Bay and Lake Champlain. He enjoyed using his skills as a handyman to restore and maintain the 19th-century family home. Sam was a member of Phi Kappa Psi at Dartmouth and served in leadership roles for many years in his class’s successful Alumni Fund campaigns. He served for two years following graduation as a corporal in the U.S. Army.
