Nicholas Danforth ’57
Nicholas Danforth ’57, M.D., passed away on December 24, 2014. He had been living with his wife, Dorothy, in Arlington, Vermont, at the time of his death. Nick came to Dartmouth from Sidney, New York. He majored in English and participated in the sophomore orientation committee, crew, Athletic Council, Outing Club and rowing club. After graduating in 1963 from Albany Medical School, where he was trained as a surgeon, Nick became a professor of surgery at Dartmouth Medical School. He was in the vanguard of developing prepaid medicine (now called managed care) at the University of Utah, where he pursued a residency in psychiatry. He went on to serve as chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral medicine and senior vice president of Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pennsylvania. More recently, Nick served as staff psychiatrist of Southwestern Vermont Health Care. In addition to Dorothy, Nick is survived by three daughters (two of whom attended Dartmouth) and eight grandchildren.
