Morris Jacob Seligman ’39

Morris Jacob Seligman ’39, M.D., died January 20 at the Maine General Medical Center in Augusta. Morris graduated from Dartmouth Phi Beta Kappa, went on to the Medical School and earned his M.D. at New York University School of Medicine in 1942. In World War II he served with the 6th Division in the South Pacific. After the war he established a private general medicine practice in his hometown of Concord, New Hampshire, and was noted for his commitment to caring for all those in need. In 1949 he married Rhya Levine of New York City. In 1955 Morris started working for the Veterans Administration, completing his psychiatry residency at the Brocton VA Hospital in 1958. Then he and his family moved to Augusta and Morris began his 28-year psychiatric career at the VA at Togus. For several years he served as chief psychiatrist at Togus and also as president of the Maine Psychiatric Association. After retirement in 1986 Morris enjoyed reading and loyally following the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots on television. His wife, Rhya, died in April 2008 and Morris is survived by daughter Martha.
