Michael Howard Savage ’60

Michael Howard Savage ’60, Ph.D., passed away on May 12 surrounded by his family at his home in Darien, Connecticut. He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth, as well as his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Winifred, Thomas, Margaret, Stephen, Karen and Richard. Michael came to Dartmouth in 1956 from Queens Village in New York City, where he graduated from Jamaica High School. At Dartmouth he majored in psychology and was a member of the Symphony Orchestra as a pianist as well as a member of the Glee Club. Following Dartmouth he earned a master’s in guidance and education and a Ph.D. in educational administration from New York University. For more than 37 years Michael worked in the field of education, primarily with the New York State Education Department, where he was responsible for funded programs in public schools and for school registration for public and private schools in the New York metro area. Following his retirement Michael was a consultant to the New York City Board of Education. Michael remained active with Dartmouth until his death, notably serving as a member of the executive committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York City for more than 35 years. His memorial Mass was held on June 3 at St. Thomas More Church of Darien. Donations in memory of Michael may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 42040, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
