Michael A. Harris ’51
Michael A. Harris ’51 died on November 4, 2014, at his home on the Maine coast in Ogunquit. He and long-time partner Connie Griffin found endless pleasure in their views of the sea, lobsters in any form, community and, in earlier years, sailing and skiing. As a way to give back he endowed the Michael A. Harris Scholarships for outstanding students from southern Maine. He enjoyed meeting the scholarship recipients whose Dartmouth experience his gifts made possible. No member of the class of ’51 was more gregarious or took greater pleasure in his many friendships. While living in Boston not long after graduation Mike regularly hosted “come one, come all” lobster parties. His warmth and genuine regard for others account in large part for his successful career as a certified financial analyst and senior vice president for more than 30 years at Salomon Smith Barney. These same qualities made him a highly effective volunteer leadership chairman in Dartmouth’s major capital campaign in the mid 1990s. Mike grew up in Swampscott, Massachusetts. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and sociology, was a member of Pi Lambda Phi and served on a number of Winter Carnival committees. He did graduate work at New York University in finance and served for four years in the U.S. Air Force.
