Matthew Joseph Cooper ’02
Matthew Joseph Cooper ’02 passed away peacefully on November 30, 2014, at Yale-New Haven Hospital from complications following emergency surgery. Matt grew up in East Lyme, Connecticut, and lived in Stamford, Connecticut, at the time of his death. At Dartmouth he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and majored in anthropology modified with philosophy, graduating with honors. After Dartmouth Matt attended the University of Virginia School of Law and most recently worked as an attorney with the firm Day Pitney LLP. Matt is survived by his wife, Michelle; parents Bruce ’74 and Kristi; brother Jonathan and his wife, Katherine; grandparents Lilla and Milton ’46, DMS’45; grandmother Virginia; and uncle Scott ’77. Classmate Jeff Hafner, who was also a high school classmate, shared this memory: “Matt was always a great friend. He was quick to laugh—his very own laugh. I can picture it, kind of a chuckle, made with slightly rosy cheeks and a huge smile on his face.” Classmate J.R. Lederer said, “Matt is someone who lived life to the fullest, was always generous with his friends and family and was a pleasure to be around. He had a fun-loving spirit that was an inspiration to those of us who lived with him, traveled with him and spent time with him in Hanover and beyond. He will be missed for sure, but certainly not forgotten as we gather to tell stories, reminisce and raise a glass to his far-too-brief time with us.”
