Leon J. Cone ’41

Leon J. Cone ’41, M.Div., of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, died on July 16, 2011. “Lee” was born in Ironwood, Michigan. At Dartmouth he was a member of the Outing Club and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Lee served in the Army Air Force during World War II as a meteorology officer in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946. He then worked in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the Dewey and Almy Chemical Co. and became sales manager of its Chicago branch. After serving six years as office manager for Moody Church he decided to enter the pastorate. He earned his M.Div. in 1968 from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, South Hamilton, Massachusetts. In 1979 he was ordained as an American Baptist minister. For 27 years he held a succession of staff and administrative posts with the seminary. Lee contributed to his community in many ways, including serving 11 years as a chaplain of the Mountain View County Nursing Home in Ossipee, New Hampshire. For 18 years he served a volunteer ministry as visitation pastor for his home church, the First Congregational Church of Ossipee. In 1941 Lee married Eleanore Baldwin, who survives him with their son, three daughters, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In 1987 Lee and Eleanore retired to Birch Hill Estates in Wolfeboro.
