Laurance Stoddard Worth ’52

Laurance Stoddard Worth ’52 passed away on March 29, 2009, in Denver. B.J. Worth, oldest son of Larry, reported he was a victim of Alzheimer’s. At the time of his passing Larry was 19 days shy of his 79th birthday. Larry came to Dartmouth from Waban, Massachusetts, and prepared for college at Vermont Academy. He majored
in geology, was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa and active in outdoor programs. His
academic interest in geology was no fluke, as he spent his entire career as a geophysicist, mostly in the oil industry—and it was an exciting life, taking him around this country and the world. During the first post-college years, he wrote, “We moved 27 times, had 35 abodes and many friends.” He worked for Conoco (now Conoco-Phillips) for many years and, in handling a wide range of responsibilities, lived in Oklahoma, Montana, California, Texas, New York,
London, Cairo and Colorado. At his retirement he settled in Gunnison, Colorado. His personal life was also a success. He and his wife, Grace, were married and had B.J. before college
graduation and were married for more than 50 years. Grace passed away just a few months before Larry. Larry is survived by children B.J., Chris and Greg and brother Dean ’49.
