Larry David Mitchell ’64

Larry David Mitchell ’64 died January 22 of cancer. Family and friends celebrated his life in Auburn, California, on February 26. A Dartmouth alumnus who knew of his high school academic and athletic success encouraged Larry to attend the College. He played freshman football, pledged Phi Delta Alpha, graduated (engineering) and then earned an M.B.A. from Stanford in 1966. After two years as an Army officer he joined Hewlett-Packard, where for his last 12 years he was general manager of the Roseville, California, terminals division, which employed more than 5,000 people. BusinessWeek said, “Mitchell teamed up engineers and specialists in manufacturing and marketing to solve problems together.” The result was a radically new terminal designed for low-cost, high-volume production. Larry retired at 55, but continued on boards of Finisar Corp., U.S. Bank and Placer Sierra Bank, as chairman. He served on boards of Pride Industries, Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, American Leadership Forum, Valley Vision, U.C. Davis School of Management and Thayer School of Engineering and the liver transplant board of the University of California Davis Medical Center. Larry’s wife Denise “Cookie,” their sons Bruce and Scott and their wives and two grandchildren survive. His commitment to family and community service and his belief in the power of education will live on through the Larry D. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund administered by the Placer Community Foundation (www.placercf.org). Larry Mitchell was a son of Dartmouth who took great pride in his association with the College and treasured the fellowship of his classmates and fraternity brothers.
