Julian Kenneth Robinson ’52

Julian Kenneth Robinson ’52 passed away on January 24 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts. “Julie” came to Dartmouth from Jersey City, New Jersey, where he graduated from Lincoln High School. At Dartmouth he was a member of Pi Lambda Phi and graduated in 1956 with a degree in history. His Dartmouth education was interrupted after his junior year with a stint in the U.S. Army, but he remained loyal to the class of 1952. Julie then became an officer in the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students in New York for eight years. He returned to Jersey City in 1964 and served as director of the department of health and welfare, ran unsuccessfully for mayor of the city, then served for 25 years at Jersey City State College. He was first dean of student affairs for eight years, then vice president for student services until his retirement in 1994. During his career Julie had many appointments to boards and civic organizations, and he was a founding member of the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association. Julie and his wife, Mimi, who survives him, then retired to Oak Bluffs. In retirement Julie was well known for his wildlife photographs, many of which appear on the walls of homes, businesses and institutions in the community. In a touching article published by The Martha’s Vineyard Times, the paper noted, “In retirement on Martha’s Vineyard Julian became known for his courtly manner and his photographs of birds, often accompanied by poems.”
