Joseph Thomas Murphy III ’54
Joseph Thomas Murphy III ’54 passed away on January 29 in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Tom entered Dartmouth from Havertown, Pennsylvania, having graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic High School, where he was active in dramatics, the school paper, tennis and track. An honors student, Tom served as vice president of his class and was elected to the national Honor Society. At Dartmouth Tom was a chemistry-zoology major, leaving Dartmouth after junior year to attend medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He commented in the 1954 25th reunion book, Reflections, that leaving was “one of his greatest mistakes.” After graduating from medical school he spent two years as a medical officer in Turkey. After his residency Tom practiced diagnostic radiology at a community hospital in suburban Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1994. Tom is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marion, five children and 16 grandchildren.
