Joseph A. Garry Jr. ’44
Joseph A. Garry Jr. ’44 died on July 5, 2010. Joe came to Dartmouth from Vincentian Institute in Albany, New York, where he was president of the honor society. He enlisted in the Army Air Force and was a member of the 376th Heavy Bombardment Group. As a master sergeant, the youngest in the nation at that time, Joe was an armorer gunner, aerial photographer and gunnery instructor. He participated in numerous campaigns and was shot down over Greece during the Balkans air offensive. He was missing in action for three months, but evaded capture and rejoined his group in San Pancrazio, Italy. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal as well as several other air medals. Joe returned to Dartmouth after the war, earning a B.A. in history, and was a member of Kappa Sigma. He completed his M.A. in history at SUNY Albany, and taught history, social studies and English for many years in Lake George, Luzerne and Warrensburg, New York. In addition, for 20 years he commuted to Albany, where he worked for the Legislative Bill Drafting Commission at the Capitol. Joe was a longtime Lake George resident and owner-operator of the Roaring Brook Ranch and Tennis Resort. He was active and involved in the community there, a member and officer of many local and business associations and a card-carrying member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. His wife, Juanita, and three children survive him, as well as numerous grandchildren.
