John Stewart Waugh ’49
John Stewart Waugh ’49 died on August 22, 2014. John came to Dartmouth from Windham (Connecticut) High School and received his Ph.D. in chemistry and physics from Cal Tech after earning the top chemistry prize at Dartmouth. While at Cal Tech he made discoveries in using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) that he expanded on after moving to MIT in 1953. He basically invented the field of solid-state NMR that enables scientists to study the molecular structure of proteins, nucleic acids (such as DNA), membranes, viruses and certain drugs. He won numerous important awards, including an honorary doctorate from Dartmouth in 1989. John, who lived in Lincoln, Massachusetts, is survived by his wife, Susan, daughter Alice and son Frederick.
