John A. Stempel ’57

John A. Stempel ’57 died on August 29, 2015, in Fort Worth, Texas. He had stage-four melanoma at the time of his death. Jack came to Dartmouth in 1953 from Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, New Jersey. At Dartmouth he majored in English and economics. He was a member of Phi Tau, Dartmouth Outing Club, Winter Carnival Committee and the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. He loved music and was a member of the Dartmouth band, the Sultans, and the Barbary Coast, which he led in his senior year. He went on to earn his master’s in business administration from New York University. Jack had a long and distinguished career in international marketing. He worked for many years in the dental industry and later with Lockheed-Martin’s aeronautical division. He worked in New Jersey, Illinois, California, Kansas and Texas. His business travels took him to 120 foreign countries and he was truly “a citizen of the world.” Jack retired in 2001. Jack was very active in industry organizations and his church, serving as a deacon in the University Christian Church in Fort Worth. Jack remained loyal to Dartmouth and was a founding member of the Dartmouth Club of Fort Worth. He put a lot of effort into recruiting and interviewing prospective students for Dartmouth. His hobbies were writing, going to movies and photography. He participated in choral groups through the years. Jack leaves, Judy, his wife of 36 years; six daughters; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
