John Nicholas Davenport ’39
John Nicholas Davenport ’39 died September 16, 2009, in Cleveland, Ohio. At Dartmouth John majored in psychology and was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. In WW II he served as a naval officer on sub chasers in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific theaters. In 1946 he joined Fulton Foundry and Machine Co. of Cleveland, where he learned all facets of the foundry business, moved into sales and became company president in 1955. In 1960 John founded Peckinpaugh-Davenport, a manufacturers’ representatives company selling ferrous and nonferrous castings throughout Ohio. He retired in 1988. John was active in the foundry industry in addition to his own company and in civic affairs. John was a member of the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club, the Mayfield Country Club and the Cleveland Skating Club. He enjoyed golf, boating, horseback riding and fox, duck and upland game hunting. He loved people and was a loyal friend. John was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor, and grandson Jonathan Arms ’91. He is survived by brother David’40; daughters Margot, Deborah and Caroline; granddaughters Elizabeth Shields ’94 and Heather; and four great-grandchildren.
