John Horace Selby Sr. ’41
John Horace Selby Sr. ’41, M.D., died on September 8, 2009, in Lubbock, Texas, after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Jack was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and grew up in Boston. At Dartmouth he was a member of Tabard and Sigma Chi. He received his M.D. from Boston University Medical School and did postgraduate training in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He then served the Navy as surgeon at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital from 1946 to 1948 and moved to Lubbock in 1952. There he became one of west Texas’ renowned cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons. By his retirement from surgical practice in 1985 he had received numerous surgical honors and awards, including the Hippocratic Award from the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society. He was also active in community affairs and in numerous medical and charitable organizations. Jack served Dartmouth as class agent in 1991 and again from 1994 to 2002. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, children John Jr. ’65, Susan, Sherrill and Cindy, 28 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
