John Cooper McCrillis ’52

John Cooper McCrillis ’52 of Newport, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on June 21 with family by his side following a brief illness. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, on May 30, 1930, he attended Newport schools, graduated from Kimball Union Academy in 1948 and Dartmouth in 1952. At Dartmouth John was a Tuck major under the 3-2 plan, a member of Zeta Psi and an active tennis player. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Army. After the military he worked for eight years in Boston at Old Colony Trust Co. John then returned to his hometown of Newport and joined the family insurance business, serving along with his brother-in-law, Newcomb Eldridge ’50. John remained involved with the family business, McCrillis and Eldridge Insurance, until retirement. In recent years John had been involved in real estate development. He also was a committed Dartmouth alumnus and supported the local community through his involvement in numerous charitable and service organizations, including especially his church. All his life he enjoyed spending time outdoors as an avid skier, tennis player, sailor and hiker. John’s father, John ’19, was a member of the Dartmouth skiing hall of fame. John is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Katharine; children Laura, David ’83 and Bill and their spouses; four grandchildren; six nieces and nephews; and sister Sally. He was predeceased by a granddaughter.
