James A. Shanahan ’47
James A. Shanahan ’47 died on February 27 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He grew up and attended Manchester Central High School before entering college as one of the limited number of civilians in the summer of 1943. His college career was interrupted by service in the Army in Europe in the 34th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge, for which he received two Purple Heart awards. He returned to Dartmouth, majored in economics, joined Sigma Chi and the Dragon. After graduation in 1948 he went on to graduate from Boston University School of Law in 1951. He returned to Manchester, where he earned his certified public accountant accreditation and joined his father’s accounting firm. The firm eventually became part of Deloitte and Touche. He rose to become a manager of the Manchester office, and attended Dartmouth football games annually. He was an avid tennis player. As a community and professional leader he served in many capacities, including as president of the New Hampshire Society of CPAs, trustee of the Derryfield School and Franklin Pierce College, director of the Merchant’s National Bank, and with the Manchester Historic Association board of accountancy, the City of Manchester trust funds, the United Way of Manchester and the Manchester housing and development authority. He is survived by his four children.
