James Osmyn Berry ’54
James Osmyn Berry ’54 passed away on March 20, 2015, in Boynton Beach, Florida. He came to Dartmouth from Lakewood, Ohio, having attended the University School. Jim left Dartmouth after two years, transferring to Ohio Wesleyan University, where he received his degree. After a stint in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer, where he dabbled with a cartoon strip for the ship’s newsletter, Jim used his business administration degree in several ventures, including work as a management consultant in New York City. In 1961 he changed careers, accepting a position as a staff illustrator on the Cleveland Plain Dealer. In 1963 he created an editorial feature called “Berry’s World,” which achieved national syndication with a daily reach of more than 400 newspapers nationwide. Jim received invitations to the White House and he either received or was nominated for the highest awards that were bestowed by his peers in the industry. In the early 1970s he moved to Washington, D.C., and launched a second feature, called “Benjy.” In the early 1980s he settled in south Florida, where he continued his work. By the 1990s “Berry’s World” appeared daily in approximately 1,000 newspapers. He retired in 2003. Jim was a five-time winner of National Cartoonist Society awards and winner of the National Headliners Club Award and served as president of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists. His wife of 59 years, Heather, predeceased him. He is survived by sons J. Duncan and Alexander.
