James M. Hutton III ’50
James M. Hutton III ’50 of Rye, New York, and lastly of Nantucket, Massachusetts, died on July 25, 2010. While at Dartmouth he was a member of Psi Upsilon, where he was social chairman. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and summered in Nantucket in a house purchased by his grandparents in 1916. After graduation “Pflueger” (as he was known to his friends) became a fisherman in Nantucket for a short while before returning to Cincinnati as a salesman for New England Mutual Insurance Co. In 1954 he married Virginia Palfrey of Boston. Together they had three children. For most of his working life he was a stockbroker with W.E. Hutton, a family company, and its successors. He was, however, with Wells Fargo Advisors on a full-time basis until February 2010. Jim was an aviator, having bought an Aeronca in the 1940s. He flew out of Nantucket, flew for the Navy before college and for Dartmouth Air on weekends while at the college. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of several yacht and golf clubs. He won several fishing tournaments, including the Cuttyhunk (Massachusetts) First International Swordfish Tournament. He was a competitive sailor, having participated in the Newport to Bermuda race a number of times. Predeceased by his wife, Ginny, he leaves children, Marianne, Sarah and James, their spouses, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
