James J. vonGal ’63

James J. vonGal ’63, an insurance executive, died March 21, 2014, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He resided in Quechee, Vermont. Jim was born in Washington, Connecticut, and attended the Gunnery School. At Dartmouth he majored in economics, served on the Interdormitory and Interfraternity councils and was a brother of Phi Kappa Psi, now Panarchy, an undergraduate society. Jim joined Aetna Life and Casualty in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1963 and Van Norman Machine Co. in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1965 as sales representative. An Army reservist, Jim served in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1968 and 1969, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. In 1969 Jim joined Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co., where he spent the next 20 years in various positions in customer service, information systems and marketing. He retired from Connecticut Mutual in 1989 and moved with his wife, Eileen, whom he met in the insurance industry, to Quechee. Both continued in insurance, Eileen full time at National Life Insurance Co. in Montpelier, Vermont, and Jim in various endeavors with National Life Insurance and as consultant to various insurance companies assisting in preparing information systems for Year 2000 processing. Jim served as president and general manager of the Quechee Club, the resort club of the Quechee Lakes Landowners Association, in the 1990s. After retiring completely from insurance in 2001 Jim spent eight years as a lister for the town of Hartford, Vermont. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by son Scott and daughter Piper.
