Hugh Donald Staubes ’52

Hugh Donald Staubes ’52 passed away on March 5 at his home in Gainesville, Virginia. His wife of 60 years, Helene Bradley Staubes, was at his side. After growing up in Utica, New York, and graduating from Utica Free Academy, Don came to Dartmouth, where he majored in history, was a member of Delta Upsilon and the German Club and worked for WDBS. After graduation he began his 31-year career at General Electric, which moved him and his family to McLean, Virginia, in 1969. Eventually Don specialized in helping provide GE-designed radar to the U.S. naval air program, and he was frequently seen in the halls of the Pentagon. An active participant in his children’s lives, Don volunteered at swim meets at Kent Gardens Recreation Club in McLean and eventually served a term as president of the club. He participated in the local Boy Scouts troop as the father of a scout. In addition to his wife, Don is survived by children Bradley, Molly and Laura and their families, including six grandchildren, and brother Roger. He was predeceased by his daughter, Diane.
