Herbert R. Drury ’52
Herbert R. Drury ’52 of Big Bear City, California, passed away on December 25, 2011, of cancer. Although born in Cleveland, Ohio, he grew up in Hanover and graduated from Hanover High School, where he was captain of the ski team. He graduated with highest distinction in his major, geography, from Dartmouth. He was a member of Theta Delta Chi and the DOC, a letterman on the ski team and president of the Bait & Bullet Club. His father and two brothers are also Dartmouth alumni. Herb first had a 20-year career as a biology and science teacher in New England schools at both the secondary and college level, but his passion was hunting, fishing and the outdoors, along with telling tales of his adventure. He had many official and semi-official trips to the Arctic and Greenland in the mid-1950s to capture and domesticate musk oxen. Herb left New England, first for Colorado and, in 2002, he and his wife Sherry moved to Big Bear. Herb kept himself busy at the Big Bear Discovery Center and a local hunting club, Quail Unlimited. He also was a member of the Big Bear Writer’s Group. The outdoors was his life and he made the most of it. He is survived by his brother Francis; children Herbert Jr., Robyn, Alix and Dana from his first wife, who preceded him in death; 12 grandchildren; his wife, Sherry; and stepchildren Christine, Robert, Peter, John and Dean.
