Herbert Katz ’52

Herbert Katz ’52 of Falmouth, Massachusetts, and Loon Mountain, New Hampshire, passed away after a brief illness on May 6, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Jossilane and the late Barbara and the late Laraine. Herb was born on January 6, 1931, and grew up in Chelsea and Dorchester, Massachusetts. He attended and was a lifelong supporter of both Boston Latin School and the class of 1952. At Dartmouth Herb majored in psychology and was a member of Sigma Nu and Barbary Coast. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1952 through 1954. He was the owner of General Builders Supply Co., started by his father and uncle, and he grew the company greatly during a period of 50 years. Herb was past president and Man of the Year of the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Dealers Association. He maintained an active affiliation with the Falmouth Jewish Congregation and was a member of the Falmouth Yacht Club and Falmouth Elks. He also supported Combined Jewish Philanthropies and Jewish National Fund. He enjoyed a fantastic life of skiing, tennis, travel and especially family. His children Jerald (and wife Sidney), Rick ’79 (and wife Kalilla), Chuck (and wife Jill), Corey (and wife Meredith) and his wife, Jossilane, survive him, as do grandchildren Rochelle, Laurie, Sabrina, Alexa, Joshua, Loren, Gabriel, Jacob, Robbie, Brenna, Michael and Cameron and brothers Sumner, Burton and Leonard.
