Harry Fox Hopper Jr. ’43
Harry Fox Hopper Jr. ’43 died June 17, 2013. Harry grew up in Pasadena, California, and graduated from the Polytechnic School before coming to Dartmouth. In 1942 he left college to join the American Field Service, serving for a year in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Spain. He then joined the Navy/Marine Corps as a pharmacist, second class, teaching military first aid and chemical warfare. After the war Harry returned to Dartmouth, where he was a member of the orchestra and Glee Club and played soccer, hockey and basketball. He graduated in 1946. A year later he married Nancy Ellis, with whom he had two children. After a brief period with Shell Oil, Harry received a fellowship to study Arabic and Middle Eastern subjects at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. In 1949 he accepted a position with the U.S. State Department in the Near Eastern research division and, in 1950, was posted to the U.S. embassy in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as the economic and commercial officer. Thirty-eight years later he left the State Department and worked in the Arabian American Oil Co. government relations department. In 1965 he opened his own office in Beirut and became Middle East director for a number of U.S manufacturers. In 1976 he moved his office to Amman, Jordon, remaining there until he closed the office in 1987. Harry is survived by his second wife, Adriana; children Nataly, Harry III, Edmund, Laurence and Albert; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
