Harold C. Johnson Jr. ’51

Harold C. Johnson Jr. ’51 died on June 1 at his home in Harwich, Massachusetts, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Maribel, two children and a grandchild. After graduation from Dartmouth Harry served in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant and earned an M.B.A. from New York University. Harry had a productive and satisfying career as an insurance underwriter with Home Life Insurance Co. He and his family lived for many years in Chatham, New Jersey, enjoying frequent vacations on Cape Cod. When he retired in 1996 the family moved full-time to the Cape, settling in Harwich. Harry spent his retirement years there, enjoying the outdoors as an avid walker, swimmer and kayaker and playing golf. Besides being ardent New York Yankees fans, he and Maribel were regulars at Cape Cod League baseball games, rooting for the Harwich Mariners. His church was at the center of Harry’s life. In college he was active in the Dartmouth Christian Fellowship. In Chatham and Harwich he and Maribel were active church members, regularly serving meals to nursing home residents, among other activities. Other interests included the Boy Scouts and the Chatham Creative Arts Center.
