Gordon Henry Francis Carter ’43

Gordon Henry Francis Carter ’43 died March 22 in Brittany, France. Gordon graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, New York, where he was on the board of the yearbook and played soccer. At Dartmouth Gordon majored in sociology, was a member of the French Club and played hockey and soccer. Gordon dropped out of Dartmouth before graduation because he “found it cut off from the real world.” He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, became a major and squadron leader and was awarded the Royal Air Force (RAF) Distinguished Flying Cross. After his military discharge he lived virtually around the world in various responsible positions with UNICEF, including director for South and Central Asia and later director for Europe. In retirement Gordon, from his home in Brittany, was involved with many historical, cultural and environmental organizations. He looked after two ancient houses, gardens and woods, attended RAF reunions and, with his wife, Janine, visited their children and grandchildren. Janine, whom he married in 1945, survives with children Eric, Bridgette, France and Nathalie and seven grandchildren.
