Gilbert Lewis Augenblick ’43
Gilbert Lewis Augenblick ’43 died December 1, 2013, in Denver. Gil grew up in South Orange, New Jersey. He was a cum laude graduate of Newark Academy. At Dartmouth he was a member of the Outing Club. Gil served with the 10th Mountain Division, the Signal Corps and Army Security in military intelligence from 1943 to 1946. Soon after his discharge as a second lieutenant he married Maxine Hillman. From 1947 to 1985 Gil was with the Hudson and the Atlantic and Port Newark Refrigerating Cos. with various duties such as president, treasurer and CEO of management and sales. In 1985 he moved to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey, where he served as vice president, secretary and treasurer. Through the years he was on the boards of the Maplewood Bank and Trust Co., Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark Academy alumni association, the Lautenberg Center for Tumor Immunology and the Greater Newark Development Fund and was president of the Mountain Ridge Country Club. One of his most prized honors came in 1976, when he received an award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Ever loyal to Dartmouth, Gil was involved with the college’s national research development program. Gil was predeceased by Maxine, the mother of his three children, as well as wives Alma and Elaine. He is survived by children John (and his wife, Frances), Susan and Kathryn ’79 (and her husband, Loren); various stepchildren; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
