Gilbert F. Mueller Jr. ’51

Gilbert F. Mueller Jr. ’51, M.D., died on April 14 in Appleton, Wisconsin. He was one of 24 members of the class of ’51 who attended Dartmouth Medical School; he regularly attended reunions of that tight-knit group. At Dartmouth “Ace” was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, Sphinx, and the varsity football team, where he earned his letter as one of three excellent quarterbacks. He completed his medical degree at the University of Michigan. He served his residency and internship in Minneapolis before spending two years as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Settling in Appleton, he cofounded Fox Valley Surgical Associates, which became an integral part of the area’s healthcare community, known especially for its cardiac care program. Ace was known for his vision as a leader, talents as a surgeon, and the kind, compassionate care of his patients. He volunteered his services in treating patients and mentoring physicians in Sri Lanka and aboard a hospital ship. He retired from his practice in 1990 and then spent 14 years crisscrossing the United States selecting sites for Biolife Plasma Services. Ace was a down-to-earth man of many talents and passions, including farming, cattle ranching, painting, writing poetry, and silversmithing. He was an active contributor to the Appleton community and was a member of the advisory board of DMS. He and wife, Barbie, who predeceased him, divided their time in retirement between Big Cedar Lake, Wisconsin, and Oro Valley, Arizona
