George Russell Hanna ’39

George Russell Hanna ’39 died September 16, 2009, at Langdon Place in Keene, New Hampshire. At Dartmouth George majored in history, was a member of Zeta Psi, Green Key, Casque & Gauntlet and the Interfraternity Council, starred on the baseball team and was awarded the Dartmouth Cup. After retiring from the Army counterintelligence corps as a major in WW II, he earned his law degree in 1948 from Boston University Law School. Enjoying more than 50 years of practicing law in Keene, George was one of New Hampshire’s most respected lawyers and served on the board of the state bar association, as a trustee of the University of New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce College and as a member of the state ballot law commission. He was active in Keene community affairs and also with Dartmouth 1939. George is survived by Shirley, his wife of 63 years, children Tom ’71, Susan, Kate and Lucy ’81, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
