George Norman Grosshans ’52
George Norman Grosshans ’52 passed away at his home in Berlin, Germany, on July 20, 2014, a victim of cancer. George came to Dartmouth, graduating from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, in 1948. He majored in history at Dartmouth, was a member of Kappa Sigma, active in Germania and the German Club and was a member of the International Relations Club. After college George served two years in the U.S. Navy, then received an M.A. in international business and finance at Tufts’ Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford, Massachusetts. He was employed for many years in the international division of Owens-Illinois Corp., where he worked on the East and the West coasts until 1972. He then was employed by Mead Packaging and represented other companies in the packaging field until retirement. In the mid-1950s he married Phyllis Greenlaw (Mount Holyoke). They had sons Eric and Peter and divorced in 1966. After retirement George lived for some time in California, then moved to Berlin several years ago. His two sons, their spouses, six grandchildren and his partner, Mahboub, survive him. News of George’s passing came from his good friend, classmate and fraternity brother Nick Skylor and his wife, Dorothy, who remained in touch with him all these years. Nick says, “My friendship with George goes back to my early days at Dartmouth and I often observed George’s generosity and his way of helping people. He had a big heart.”
